Beyond Tallinn

TallinnTallinn

Tallinn is fast becoming a new destination for a popular stag night party weekends that usually start already on Thursday evening and go on until Sunday. This is good news for formerly targeted cities in the Central Europe such as Prague, but not so much for you in Tallinn. So the best way to deal with the nuisance is to consider leaving the city for a few days.

You can travel across Estonia in one or two days and can choose to explore a total of 15 counties. Other cities worth visiting are southern Tartu, which is often considered the intellectual and cultural hub, Parnu (one of the largest rivers carries the same name) with its splendid beach or Narva located at the eastern extreme point of Estonia, by the Russian border.

If you are feeling even more adventurous and have your passport ready, simply leave the country on ferry trip to Helsinki that is only about 80 km away or optionally take a train down to Latvian Riga.

Estonia boasts numerous bogs, and 3794 kilometres (2,357 mi) of coastline marked by numerous bays, straits, and inlets. The number of islands and islets is estimated at some 1,500. Two are large enough to constitute their own counties: Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.

Saaremaa forms the main barrier between the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea. To the south of it is the main passage out of the gulf, the Irbe Strait, next to Sõrve Peninsula, the southernmost portion of the island. The highest point on the island is 54 m above sea level. One particularly interesting feature found on the island is the Kaali crater. There is also a completely preserved village Koguva, a skansen you can tour around and visit a Muhu museum.
